Before going on holiday in any destination in the world, it is very important that you have an idea of what to expect. In this way, you will not be too shocked to find some things that are not considered as regular in your country.
Spain is a land of multi cultures as well as traditions. There are many fiestas and celebrations that help the Spaniards get in touch with their roots.
One of the customs revolves around food and drink. Lunch is considered as the most important meal within a day. Most cultures recognize breakfast as the most important meal so in a way Spain differs a great deal. During dinner and lunch, no one will start to eat before all are seated at the table. This is especially important to note if you have chosen a Spaniard home as an accommodation option. After you are done eating, you shouldn’t leave the table until everyone else is done.
The table manners expected are informal and standard but they greatly depend on the place where you choose to eat. When you eat out, it is quite a common practice to split the bill into equal amounts thus regardless of the price that you actually consumed. You may therefore be expected to pay more or less while eating out with Spaniards. You should note this carefully.
For Spaniards, gifts are not accepted expressly. The same applies when it comes to meal and drink offers. They are known to be reluctant for a while. This is part of their culture as they do not want to look like they are greedy. Do not be surprised when this happens. You may even witness some arguments especially as one tries to reject the offer of a gift, drink or meal. It is however deemed as polite. If you are seriously offering, do so several times and on the third offer it will be quite clear whether the offer is accepted or rejected. When offered, you should do the same. Be polite and decline but concede upon insistence. Do so if you are interested in the offer.
Eating or drinking in the streets is quite uncommon in Spain. Spaniards rarely do this. In bars, takeaway food is not an option but tapas are readily available in many places. Taking leftovers after a meal in a restaurant is also uncommon but it happens in the present day. The older Spaniards do not approve of the practice at all.
Avoid drunkenness at all costs as many people will frown at this.
